It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood and I’m not talking about Mr. Roger’s neighborhood that’s made all the millenium generation think they are special either. I’m talking about my neighborhood where the sun is shining and the sky is full of fluffy clouds and I’m queen of the Mother Road , at least for the last portion of our journey.
I love it when I hit that certain rise in the highway and there they are. Ahhh…….it takes me breath away. The giant wind generators, the modern day grown up version of the windmill, only these pump electricity rather than water.
Oklahoma is a logical choice for wind farms and harnessing wind energy because we’ve nearly always got wind. Sometimes I get so sick of the wind I could scream and then sometimes when it’s hotter than hell and there’s no wind I kick myself really hard for cursing the dang wind but I know it will be back…..maybe even in a few minutes.
There’s a saying in Oklahoma that goes….If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute. It’s true! Our weather is all over the place and I could never live where it’s always warm because I love winters. Real true honest to God cold, icy, snowy winters when you swear you’re freezing your arse off…..but ya don’t.
Did you know Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” filmed an episode at an Oklahoma wind farm? Did you know these suckers are 300 feet tall and Mike Rowe and his entire camera crew had to climb that 300 feet one step at a time? Did you know I’d think I’d died and gone to heaven if I could see Mike Rowe when he gets so dirty he has to strip down naked? (did I just say that outloud?) Did you know they truck the parts for these into Oklahoma and they use the same two lane roads I take when I’m heading home from Texas? Did you know I usually nearly always most times end up behind a huge flatbed semi hauling a single blade that is over 200 feet long and he’s driving 40 and my blood pressure is 160 because I can’t pass. O.k. I just wanted you to know this little known fact and see the sacrifice I make in the name of wind energy.
Oops, that last picture is a wind turbine of another sort and does not belong in this group but…….oh well.
Well kids, this concludes your drive through a part of Oklahoma that I love best. You’ve seen red dirt, girls in bikinis, Oklahoma mountains, oil/gas drilling rigs, my excellent driving skills, giant wind turbines and Route 66. I’ll leave you with another thing I love about this great state and it’s the beautiful old farms that are scattered about the landscape.
In fact, this is where I live. Now then, want to come visit me? I’ll leave the lights on for ya. *wink wink*
HAPPY TRAILS, Y’ALL
