This Is Progress, Right??

We ARE making progress on the guest house but it’s still not as far along as it should be.  It’s been a matter of keeping everything running on schedule but there’s always that one (or sometimes two) that throws a big monkey wrench in the whole works and brings progress to a halt.

S

In this case it was the plumber.  Or maybe it was the electrician.  I think it was both of them that kept calling and rescheduling but I can’t keep them straight since one is Donny and one is Danny.  They’re both very good at what they do and therefore end up so busy that our little piddly job just gets wedged in there wherever they’ve got a few free hours.

S

Because the plumber and electrician didn’t get done in time, Hunka Burnin Love couldn’t finish putting up the rest of the sheetrock so the tape and texture guy could mud the walls so the painter (that would be me) could begin painting.  I think I’ve already told you all this so now my problem is how to fit in all the things I want/need in there and still have room for a queen size bed.  After all, what good is a guest house if there’s no place for guests to sleep?

S

Looking at the east side

As you can see from the above picture, it’s basically one big open room and one bathroom.  That white door you see on the tan metal wall is the door into the barn.  If I find a Murphy bed, it will need to go on the sheetrocked wall next to that door and it would open in front of that door, which is fine since it wouldn’t block the door when it’s folded up.  That spot is the only place for a bed (that I can see).

The picture above is of the west side.  You can see HBL and I were able to get the upper cabinets hung even though we had to re-do them twice because of a measuring error not on my part before he left and to the right of the kitchen is the bathroom.  If you think the fans look weird, you’re right but it’s only because we don’t have the blades on yet.  We also don’t have the antique school house lights hung and I hope they get put up before another one gets broken.  ack!

The lights and their housings.

The lights and their housings.

These lights are really large but they don’t look so big in this picture.  The two with the rods will hang in the kitchen and three of the other lights will hang in the living/bedroom area.  Oh, and yes….I have cleaned them up but I like the old patina on the housings and so I just used a little WD-40 to clean them and we’ll hang them just like that, rust spots and all.  Our electrician thinks I’m nuts.

Another view of the west side and the sleeping loft.

From this angle you can see the bathroom better and also the kids sleeping loft.  That platform over the bathroom will have a spiral staircase leading to the loft.  Oh, and yes there will be railing around the loft because I can just picture one of our 13 grands trying to walk along the top of the cabinets or swing from the light fixtures.   That ugly nice rug isn’t staying.  It’s where HBL has been putting the cabinets together so he doesn’t scratch up the floor.  He did that voluntarily.  I swear.

S

GH floorplan

While HBL was gone and it was rainy and dreary and I had nothing else to do, I found a program that lets you draw a room to scale and arrange furniture so I grabbed my tape measure and went to work.  This is what I came up with and bear in mind, it’s tentative…..sort of.   Everything but the bed and the television are things we’ve scavenged, reclaimed, or found and already have so the measurements are pretty close to scale. *I can see HBL rolling his eyes right about now*

S

Here’s what I need from y’all.  That queen bed could be horizontal in that spot if need be, because there’s room to have it a couple of feet in front of the door but maybe it would be better to put a Murphy bed there that could be pushed up and out-of-the-way but everything I’ve found online is sort of fugly or plain or weird looking.  I need your suggestions to solve this problem.  HELP!

S

HAPPY TRAILS, Y’ALL

This is looking so great! Can’t wait to see the finished project. I vote that you leave the bed as it is because there are plenty of people who like to lounge on a bed to relax while others are doing the work….. ;P

I’m thinking it might be better all the way around to just put in a regular bed (cheaper too) and hang a curtain that could be pulled to block it from the “living area” or leave it open so I can lounge and watch other people work. Ha!

  2. Nothing Fancy Says:

It’s looking terrific! I like the queen bed where it is. Arranged like it is, it seems separate from the living area – which you’d want. Arranged vertically, it would look like it’s part of the living area. So unless you want it to seem part of the living area (ie: be able to watch the living area TV from the bed)…I think you’re good to go!!!!!

I can’t wait for my visit!

I can’t wait for your visit either so don’t be teasing me!!! Good points about the bed. I’ll get HBL right on this so he can finish and then you have no excuses NOT to come. :)

  3. Tessa Says:

Would you consider a sofa bed? I hear there are some comfortable ones now, a far cry from the painful ones of yore? Looks great. Can I get on the waitlist for guest privileges when it’s all done?

Considered a sofa bed but until I see one that doesn’t feel like you’ve got a bar across your back, I’m skeptical.

Of course you’re on the list but there’s no “wait” to it. Come anytime!!!

I like it but would it be feasible to put the bed underneath the loft overhang or would it get in the way of the stairs? That would open more room for the desk and perhaps a chair? I do like what you’ve done — so much work – but it will be a wonderful place for your guests to stay. Can I rent it for Jan & Feb to get out of the ice? Just kidding! You’ve done a lovely job sweetie! I know your grands will have so much fun staying & others as well. Hugs and blessings.

Under the loft overhang is exactly where I’d hoped it would go but the stairs are in the way and moving them create too many other problems. Yes….you can come stay Jan. and Feb but I warn you that last year during that time we actually had ice, albeit only a little and only for a few hours on a few days. :)

I have no suggestions. I’m terrible with that sort of thing but am wondering when I can move in?

Is tonight too quick?? I’ll leave the porch light on for ya.

I can’t wait to see pictures when it is completed. Love all the open area and the glass! I bet it will be gorgeous when you are done.

I will post as we make progress. Maybe in a few weeks I’ll be able to paint. *crossing my fingers*

  7. Zuell Says:

I started to say put it under the loft too, but can see now that is not possible. I love it the way it is….the drape idea for privacy is good too. I can’t wait to see the finished product. I don’t think your guests will ever want to leave!!

My husband has informed me I have the stairs wrong and it will fit under the overhang but now I’m worried about the stairs being out in the middle of the room. *sigh* I guess we’ll see.

  8. Di Says:

How about this murphy bed? It hides away in the ceiling instead of the wall. Didn’t look at the price so don’t blame me if it breaks the bank, but I think it looks great!

Hahah……that would be perfect…..IF we were to win the lottery.

Looks like it’s shaping up very nicely!

It should be ready in time for your visit. :)

Yes, it let you leave a comment as MLS :) But you have ‘no-reply comment’ as the email address, which means I can’t answer. And MLS isn’t linked in the comment, so no one can click on it….looks like you need help :) ))
    xo

You have NO idea how true that statement really is. :)

This entire post sounds like my work day…DAMN ELECTRICIANS!!!!

No way was I damning our electrician!! I’m grateful he worked us in for such a piddly little job. I just wish there was a magic wand one could wave and get everyone scheduled on time. Would you work on that, please? LOL

  12. Pseudo Says:

I’m not with a suggestion – but that guest house looks awesome and inviting. Bet it’s never going to be unoccupied.

  13. littlemsblogger Says:

How about a trundle bed? So many double as a beautiful couch.

  14. Alan Says:

    WOW! It looks awesome!

  15. Jan Says:

I’m with the “leave the bed where you have it” in the conceptual drawing camp. In fact, I really love the layout you did in the program you found. It looks like it will be so comfy and cozy – I can’t wait to see the pictures when it’s finished!

  16. tera Says:

    I’m thinkin’…. hmmm…. I think it would be easier if I could come look in person… :)

Seriously, though, I’m thinkin’. I watch a lot (and I mean “a lot” like in an obsessive kind of way) of those home decorating shows.

I like the Murphy bed idea. I saw a cute set up from California Closets the other day that I was thinking about for our office area. You might look there (I have no idea about cost…).
I think I would like the bed where you have the tv. If you used a Murphy bed you could fold it up when you’re not using it. Have 2 couches, one you can slide up against the wall betw the door and the loft when not in use, the tv can go against the wall you currently have the bed against, then you can put another couch sort of where you have the love seat.
Then you can put the love seat at the foot of the bed when it’s down and it can be used to set stuff on or whatever.
If you put everything on coasters then you can slide everything around just fine!
Need me to draw pictures? :)

  17. steppingthru Says:

They now have sofa beds with air mattresses in them. We have one in the camper. They are VERY comfortable!

  18. Oz Girl Says:

Judging by the previous comment, it’s just a short matter of time before we are all there to have our big girls party. :)

I think you’ve done a swell job so far, it’s going to be gorgeous when it’s done. And I think the queen bed the way you have it is fine, maybe you could add the curtain/screen for a lil privacy, or not.

  19. Janie Says:

Here’s your help concerning the Murphy Bed….order the kit (just the metal and hardware) and have someone build the outside. You can make it as beautiful as you wish!

We’ve discussed that but HBL is the only one who could build to suit both of us and he’s put his foot down because his “HBL must do” list is getting so long he’ll have to live another 100 years just to get it done.

  20. Debbie Says:

I love this! I’m a little late commenting…have you decided what you’re going to do? I’m dying to know! As for measurements = pretty much to scale? Sounds like me! I’m surprised my husband’s eyes aren’t permanently impaired from all the eye-rolling!

  21. mommyknow Says:

    Wow, I am so impressed!

It looks like it’s going to be fantastic. Tons of work though!

I can’t wait to see it all finished up.

  22. Lori Says:

This looks like it will be beautiful. I can hardly wait to see pictures. I am terrible at figuring out where things are suppose to go so I won’t offer up my opinion. It sounds like you guys have been terribly busy but how fun to work on this together…or not? XXOO Lori

PS I’ve missed coming here…I look forward to catching up this weekend to see what else has been going on in your world! Hugs!
